Tavolara, the fascinating and mysterious island of Sardinia

Tavolara is an island located off the north-east coast of Sardinia, a few kilometres from Olbia. Characterised by an elongated shape, it is known for its impressive limestone cliffs, rich history and numerous anecdotes that make it a fascinating and mysterious place. In this article, we will explore the peculiarities of Tavolara and how to get there.

History
The island of Tavolara has a rich and fascinating history. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it was later occupied by the Phoenicians and the Romans. In the 19th century, the island became famous for its particular history linked to the Bertoleoni family, who declared Tavolara an independent kingdom. Although this status has never been officially recognised, the Bertoleoni family continues to use the title "King of Tavolara".

Features
Tavolara is characterised by a unique and spectacular landscape, with imposing limestone cliffs rising sheer from the sea. The island is approximately 6 km long and 1 km wide, with a maximum altitude of 565 metres. The island's territory is mostly unspoilt and is part of the Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, established in 1997 to protect marine and terrestrial biodiversity.

Anecdotes
One of the most curious anecdotes concerns the 1972 film "Treasure Island", partly filmed on the island of Tavolara. During filming, the inhabitants of the island were involved in the production, contributing to create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

Another interesting anecdote relates to the visit of King Charles Albert of Savoy in 1836, who was struck by the beauty of the island and the history of the Bertoleoni family. Following this visit, the king granted the family the title of 'Royals of Tavolara' and the right to exploit the island for fishing and sheep farming.

How to get there
Tavolara is easily reached by boat from the ports of Olbia, San Teodoro and Porto San Paolo. During the summer season, numerous tourist transport services are available offering day trips to the island, allowing visitors to discover its natural beauty and immerse themselves in its fascinating history. It is also possible to rent private boats to visit the island on your own.

In conclusion, the island of Tavolara is a true jewel of Sardinia, with its intriguing history, breathtaking landscapes and fascinating anecdotes. It offers visitors a unique and unforgettable experience, immersing them in a world of unspoilt nature and mystery.
